Shanghai Announces a 4G Mobile Testing Facility
Shanghai has built China’s first outdoor testing facilty for fourth generation (4G) mobile phone technology.
4G phones will enable users to:
1. watch high-definition TV
3. hold video conferences
4. speak in other languages
4G technology was initiated five years ago and China aims to be a leader.
The outdoor facility is needed to test vehicle-mounted devices and the use of relay and signal stations.
Shanghai plans to build a pilot 4G wireless network on Chongming Island in 07-08.
4G networks require speeds of up to 100 megabits/sec to support a constant picutre, video and voice data xfer to people who are moving, up to 300kph (180mph)…in a train, not running.
Shanghai has invested a total of about $25 million in the outdoor facility and developing 4G technology.
China has 430 million cell phone users and that number is growing by 5.5 million users a month!
It’s bad enough to have people on the phone while they drive. Now China will have 400 million of them watching HDTV while they motor down the road at 300 kph.
