One in Five Beijinger Not Mentally Well

Submitted by Bill Belew on Tuesday, 16 January 2007No Comment

Shanghaiese have been saying this about Beijingers all along.

Beijing's municipal government took a survey to investigate the mental health of its residents.

About 20% of the city residents are living in a 'sub-healthy' mental condition with only 3 public organizations to deal with them.

Between 70-80% of hospital out-patients suffer from mental and social disorders. About 130,000 have serious mental disorders. And they are outpatients? Roaming the streets? In Beijing? And the Olympics are coming?

Of the 20% that are 'sub-healthy', 3% have emotional handicaps and 5% are depressed….The 'normal' folks are getting depressed as well because so many oddballs are running around.

The rate of 'serious mental disorder' for Chinese over 60s is estimated to be more than 20%…that's one in five of Bejing's elderly are in serious mental condition.

That's good to know before I head out for the Olympics next year.
