ON Semiconductor Microchips – Big Business for Arizona to China

Submitted by Bill Belew on Friday, 8 September 2006No Comment

The U.S. Census Bureau reported that 68% of Arizona’s exports to China are microchips.

Circuits are etched into silicon wafers in Az or a neighboring state, then sent to China where they are sliced and put in ceramic packages, then shipped to electronic makers in Asia, finally ending up in an MP3 player or cell phone on the shelves at Verizon Wireless.

ON Seminconductor is one such business that sees this whole process through.

ON Semiconductor used to be a part of Motorola. About 10 years ago an assembly and test center was set up in Leshan, Sichuan Province.

What is interesting in this story to me is the reason why Leshan was chosen.

The Motorola executive assigned to get this project up and going chose Leshan Radio Co. as its partner because it liked the integrity (not a word you hear to often when doing business in China) of Leshan Radio’s president.

Because of this relationship of trust and honesty, a small plant was established in Leshan. Motorola brought in personnel from Malaysia to train the local workforce.

Within 3 years, the company grew four-fold.

Today ON Semiconductor employs 2000 people in Leshan. And, it all started because one man was trustworthy and another bought into it.

Wouldn’t that be a great way to do business? On foundations of integrity and honesty.
