Internet Population reaches 132 million in China

Submitted by Bill Belew on Friday, 29 December 2006No Comment

China's internet population has reached 132 million users…up 30% from last year..and up 7.5% from June of this year.

The number of broadband users, however, is less than 40% of that with 52 million.

When broadband becomes more available, the number of users is likely to soar even higher.

Online commerce, advertising and gaming will follow.

I spent this past week with my sister in Nowhere, Indiana. She has internet access but also still has dialup. 49.2kps or something like that.

Of course, it doesn't compare to the 100 Mps that we enjoy here in the Valley.

When more and more Chinese learn what they can do online, at 1000 times the speed they are getting…more and more will jump on.

And businesses, advertisers and gamers everywhere in China will be plenty happy about that.

What do you think?

I think that I have always had a better internet connection in China (including, in smaller places like Yantai) than I ever have had at my parents’ house in Kalamazoo, MI, or at my in laws’ house in Peru, IL. So I got a built in Cingular wireless modem for my laptop and wouldn’t you know it, it works beautifully in big cities like Chicago, LA and Seattle (where I hardly need it), but moves at a snail’s pace in the provinces.
