I Lost My Job to China

Submitted by Bill Belew on Sunday, 4 June 2006No Comment

Everybody looks for a scapegoat.

You would think that Americans who have lost jobs in the past year or so would be more likely to want to blame …well, China. Everything else that goes on is blamed on China, right?

But that is not the case.

52% of the general public thinks that severe job loss is due to China.

Only 4% more of those who lost jobs this past year blame it on China. (56%)

33% of the public thinks moderate job loss is due to China.

Compare to that 27% of those who lost jobs last year who think the same thing.

Still, a whopping 80+% think that job loss severe or moderate is due to work heading to China in one way or another.

What do you think?

    Hi Bill,

You must be very careful when drawing the conslusion that American job loss is due to China. As you said, everyone is looking for a scapegoat, but unfortunately, nationalistic sentiment prevent them from thinking about the true reason of their job loss: the US-led globalization. I don’t really take American “public opionion” seriously. It means nothing because there is too much manipulation, by the state as well as by the madia. I wonder how many of those China bashers know anything about the country at all.

    Joseph,
These are excellent insights and I couldn’t agree with you more.

I don’t think job loss is China’s fault. But unfortunately many Americans do think that.

I think American job loss is because Americans have grown lazy. They cannot produce quality products like the Japanese and they cannot manufacture them economically like the Chinese. It won’t be lonb before Chinese quality passes the US, too. And then the US will have very serious problems.

Thanks for visiting and for your insights.

I hope you will share them again.
