Gong Li’s Biggest Hollywood Challenge

Submitted by Bill Belew on Saturday, 23 December 2006No Comment

Gong Li is one of China's most popular actresses. She is also making headway into Hollywood.

She starred as a Japanese escort in "Memoirs of a Geisha", an ethnic Chinese money launderer in "Miami Vice" and as a Japanese woman married to the uncle of a serial killer in "Young Hannibal."

Recently she performed in Chollywood's "Curse of the Golden Flower."

Her biggest challenge -  “I very rarely portray a real Chinese character, like agong-li.jpg native Beijing resident, in Hollywood.”

Even in Miami Vice – Gong said: "Even though she looks Asian, her character, her thoughts, her thinking aren't Asian at all. That's hard to master."

English is not the problem…tackling non-Chinese characters is the problem.

But, isn't that why it's called acting?

Gong Li has been cast in another Hollywood movie for next year, but declined to give details.
