Gong Li in Hollywood – 3rd Times a Charm
There was quite an uproar when one of China's favorites, Zhang Ziyi, played a Japanese geisha. There is seriously bad blood between the two countries that goes back three quarters of a century.
The Japanese couldn't understand why a Chinese was pegged to play a Japanese girl, and the Chinese couldn't understand why one of their own would want to 'put on Japanese skin' even for a movie.
Chollywood's Gong Li was in the same movie. She also played a geisha…but there was no stink.
Gong Li is playing the part of Lady Murasaki ( Japanese ) in the prequel to "Silence of the Lambs" – "Hannibal Rising."
Shanghai Youth Daily says around 6,500 copies of the film will be distributed for the film's worldwide premier on Feb. 9th.
The best actress of the 1992 Venice Film will be making the rounds in Hollywood to help promote the film.
I wonder what the Chinese and Japanese have to say about her playing this role….
