DVD Players are Out in China – EVD is Coming

Chinese companies are planning to stop making DVD players from 2008.

Instead, the companies will start making EVD – enhanced versatile disc – players.

Now, only one hardware company in China is making EVD players. By 2008, 19 of 21 member manufacturers in the Industry Alliance will turn to EVD players.

The group is also considering shifting "to their own homegrown standards forevd-player.jpg third-generation mobile phones, wireless local area networks, digital TV, and home networking."

Somehow, this seems like a step backwards to me.

I learned how to use a PC in Japan, ages ago. I started on an NEC laptop. The PC was totally incompatible with anything else. I learned Ichitaro word processing and Lotus spreadsheet.

Finally, everyone started getting on the same page and now it is what it is.

So, why would this alliance want to start drawing lines and putting up walls again?

What do you think?
