Of course it is. Unfortunately, manufacturing, almost by necissity, harms the environment. The trick is to reduce the harm. Now though, articles are coming out saying that as China makes greater efforts to clean up its environment, the costs of doing so will lead to global inflation. Everything is a trade-off.

The government has actively propagated environmental protection in gateway cities. Environmental rules and legislations have been introduced but most of the enterprises are indifferent to them.

There are two key problems associated with the enforcement of environmental rules and regulations in China. First, the whole government system is too corrupt. In China, everything can be negotiable. Second, corporate social responsibility is very weak in China, particularly privately-owned enterprises. Owner-managers and their senior executives pursue economic profits at the expense of stakeholder interests.

The economic growth of China might damage the global environment if the above problems cannot be rectified in an effective and immediate manner.

Is it possible that China will become more aware of environmental issues sooner ALSO because in the west we have learned how we have hurt the environment.

In other words...we taught China how to grow, how to destroy and how to be aware of this sooner.

Of course, China's growth is not that much environmentally-friendly. Global damage ? cerainly. But can "we" seriously ask more than 1 billion individuals not to try and copy/paste what we are doing, us westerners, and try to have their share of wealth ?
Environment concern is growing in China.. it may not take as much time to become an official issue as it has been in the western world.
