China’s “Golden Week” By the Numbers

1. The average tourist spent the equivalent of $54 during the weeklong National Day holiday.

2. There was an increase of 19.% over last year to 133 million travelers in China during Golden Week.

3. The travelers spent 20.7% more than last year = $7.1 billion.

4. 174 shopping malls in 39 cities saw $67 million dollars pass through their cash registers.

5. The airlines saw $310 million and railways made $166 million.

6. Ticketing income at tourist locations – $76.9 million

7. 179 restaurants made $49.5 million

8. Consumers in China spent $38 billion to buy goods/souveniers – up 14.5% from last year.

China initiated these week long holidays in order to encourage domestic spending.

Looks like it worked last week.
