China’s 5 Step, 20-year Eco-protection Plan for Tibet

Submitted by Bill Belew on Sunday, 15 July 2007No Comment

Beijing loves Tibet…doesn't ever want to see them leave.

A new 20-year, 5-step, 20 billion yuan ($2.63 billion) plan to protect/save the eco-system of the Tibet plateau has been announced.

Wow! Lots of good buzz words in that sentence, eh?

China will invest in:

1. construction of nature reserve

2. protection of natural foresttibet.plateau.jpg

3. restoration of grassland and pasture

4. harnessing and prevention of desertification

5. prevention of geological disasters.

All in the interest of saving Tibet's plateau or is to keep Tibet in the fold…both?

Speaking of buzz words….Crienglish writes

"Tibet is a region with the most typical biological diversity and is a major gene bank ensuring global biodiversity. However,

the local eco-system is very fragile and difficult to recover after being damaged.

….implementation of the national plan will help ease the pressure posed by global warming on local ecological environment and could ensure sustainable development in the region."

Were these writers reading my environmental analysis glossary when they wrote this?

So, is China really interest in protecting Tibet's interests, or protecting China's interest in Tibet?
