China Promotes building smaller houses

Submitted by Bill Belew on Monday, 18 December 2006No Comment

A house is not a house in China…it's an apartment, kind of.

Still there is size to them…too big and too expensive a size according to the Ministry of Construction.

China is considering levying a tax on apartments that are too big. People who buy those big houses will have to pay a usage fee…kind of like the expensive upkeep one would pay on a luxury car.

A house of about 90 square meters (1,000 sq ft) should be the mainstream according to the Construction minister.

Presently, the average size of a house in China is about 113 sq meters (1200 sq ft). In Beijing, the average is over 1500 sq ft.

Not only will smaller houses be more affordable, more of them will fit into a large complex, thus helping to solve the insufficient land resource problem.

Consideration is also being given to awarding designers who come up with 'small designs.'

Somebody should invite Ikea in on that last competition. Ikea can get a lot in a small place…only problem is that it's mostly junk.

How do you think China should solve its insufficient land and housing problem?
