China Outsmarts Japan and Korea Combined

A lot of this result has to do with China having more people than Japan and Korea combined. Actually, China has more than 5-6 times the number of these two countries combined.

Still, scholars from Japan, Korea and China head to the US to study, to do research, to learn and to come back (sometimes) to their home countries to make a difference.

Asahi Japan Alamanac gives an accounting for the number of PhDs earned by these three countries over the past 25 years.

China has earned more Phds from the US than Korea and Japan combined. In fact China has earned twice as many PhDs as the other two countries combined.

Japan – 655 doctorates earned since 1980

Korea – 3,124 doctorates

China – 9,351 doctorates

A more interesting figure if it could be found is which country has the greatest number of PhD’s return home? Or which had the greatest percentage of their PhDs go home?

My bet is Japanese are the most likely to return.

What do you think?
