China Opens Public Schools to Expats
Expats working in Shanghai will be able to send their kids to public schools in Shanghai beginning next year.
Until now, children of expats had to go to one of 150 specially chosen publich schools or attend international private schools.
There is one key condition – the expats must be benefitting the city's development.
Of course, like in restaurants where laowais are charged more, tuition fees for expat children will be slightly higher.
The rules of contribution:
1. The expat must have a work permit or foreign expert permit
2. one parent must have a one-year or above resident permit
3. real-estate ownership
4. property lease contract
5. letter from the parent's employer
Presently there are about 2000 foreign students in China under the age of 18. There are more than 10 times that many foreign students studying in university.
I bet parents are dancing in the streets over this. It will be cheaper than the international schools, though more expensive than their classmates, but now moms and dads all over can rejoice that their child will just another one in 50…to be stared at, gawked at, poked, prodded and held up for show and tell.
What do you think?
