In 1987, mainland China and its renegade island started allowing personnel exchanges.

Since then, more than 40 million people from Taiwan have made the cross-strait trip to the mainland. Taiwan’s current population is only 23 million.

The number of visitors from Taiwan has been rising 14% annually.

By contrast, from the mainland, just 1.3 million visitors have ventured to Taiwan…still a 19% annual rise.

In the first seven months of this year, two and half million Taiwan tourists spent a bundle in China…and, no doubt, visited family left behind some 60 years ago.

Just 110,000 mainlanders toured Taiwan. Taiwanese tourists are up 4% over last year. Chinese tourists are up 18% over last year.

It is through these exchanges that, I think, the two sides will learn to get along and trust one another more.

Take into consideration that Taiwan’s president is quickly losing all credibility, and the Chinese mainland might get their province back.
