Bribery is the Lubricant for Chinese Business Deals
Nankai University reported in a survey to which as many as 94% of the respondents said bribery was widespread in Chinese business.
As many as 77% of the respondents replied that if necessary they, too, would resort to bribery to get the deal they are after.
The word "guanxi" connections comes to mind. However, many think that these connections are built through under the table deals, by passing cash-stuffed envelopes or at drunken parties.
The worst culprits seem to be government officials who issued licenses and certificates the survey said.
The most common businesses involved are
1. Construction projects
2. Land sales
3. Drug and medical procurement
4. Government purchases
More good news – 60% of the respondents think that the governments ongoing crackdown on "commercial bribery" won’t make any difference.
