Beijing is home to nearly 2000 hutongs (alleyway) which in turn are home to about 64,8000 Bejingites.

Since the last time it was the year of the DOG 1994 tricyclists have been hauling Westerners and Chinese alike to the tune of 180,000 tourists a year – 6 million international tourists and 10 million Chinese tourists.

Tourists are lining up before 8am, according to the Shanghai Daily, and are paying around $22.5 each to ride around in pairs for a 3 hour tour that includes ‘jiaozi’ (dumplings) with some of the locals.

What a novel idea!

The last time I was in China, I took a tour of some of these hutong by foot, and by accident. I was lost and it took me several hours to find a friend.

I should have taken a friend and charged them a fee.
