Ang Lee Joins Steven Spielberg as Arts Consultant for 2008 Beijing Games
Zhang Yimou is in charge of the 2008 Beijing Games opening and closing ceremonies.
Ceremonies such as those that go on before and after Olympic games need more talent and creativity than one person can provide.
Steven Spielberg had already been tapped by Zhang…now Ang Lee is on his team.
Ang Lee was proclaimed "the pride of Chinese people all over the world" when he won an Oscar for his "Brokeback Mountain," a movie that never made it through censorship for mainland release.
The movie did, however, get release in Taiwan, Lee’s birth place.
Question: What’s an American doing on the Chinese committee for these games?
Question: What if Lee oversteps the censorship boundaries? Will the opening and closing ceremonies not be seen on the mainland?
I, for one, am totally excited about the ceremonies for these games and expect them to be spectactular. China does know how to put on a show.
