Abstract Artist Cai Guo-Qiang’s Works Go for Record $9.5 million
Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang sold a set of 14 paintings made with gunpowder and ink for $9.5 million, nearly doubling a record set last month for the Chinese painting "Execution" by Yue Minjun.
An anonymous bidder made the purchase from Christie's which sold $107 million worth of paintings in the first of five days of auctions. The take was more than 4 times the estimate.
Buyers came from India, mainland China, Europe and the United States to
compete.
"The creative vision of Cai's unique work captivated the imagination of collectors around the world. This piece presented a powerful combination of traditional and contemporary elements that appealed to both East and West, and drew bidding from Asia, Europe and America," says Christie's.
Yeah, they would say that.
No painting, artwork is worth that much.
Unless, maybe it were something I had created.
