5 Facts about the State of AIDS in Beijing and One Big Reason Why
As of November 1st of this year, Beijing had reported 5,635 HIV positive and AIDS cases since the first case was reported in 1985.
Of those cases:
1. 21 percent were Beijing residents
2. 75.1 percent were from other regions
3. 3.9 percent were foreigners.
4. At the end of 2007, China had approximately 700,000 people living with HIV.
5. Of those 700,000, an estimated 85,000 had developed AIDS, says a UNAIDS report issued in September.
One big reason why -
Sexual transmission has replaced intravenous drug using (IDU) as the most common transmission route in Beijing – 54.6 percent of HIV infections.
Because – more than half of Beijing’s prostitutes reject the use of condoms. (53.5%) of the city’s 90,000 sex workers use condoms.
Free condoms are provided at some 22,000 Beijing venues.
Almost 3,000 automatic condom-vending machines have been installed at entertainment venues.
More machines are headed to construction sites with more than 500 workers.
The last time I was in China on business, the guy who called me to China offered to help me relax at a nearby spa after a very hard week. I went to the spa…and it was a lot more than just a spa. I wish I knew now what I didn’t know then.
