Asian Guests in Silicon Valley Meet California Dude
I witnessed a remarkable conversation this past Saturday.
It gave me great reassurance to know that California dudes, when it is needed most, can communicate with our overseas guests, from Asia and elsewhere.
It was insightful, thoughtful, able to leap great cultural gaps in a single bound.
At our local farmer's market everybody around me speaks a different language; even the English comes in flavors.
I am blessed and cursed to live in Silicon Valley where diversity is the key word and tolerance is a religion.
A certain Asian looking person asked the man selling candles in her best English -
"What does Strawberry Vanilla smell like?" holding it up to her nose because she didn't have confidence in the word smell, I suppose.
The thoughtful and cool California dude scratched his gray-haired noggin. He had had this sort of encounter before. So, he dug deep to find again the best explanation he could.
Whincing, he replied very slowly, "It's, like, um, strawberry (long pause… ) and vanilla."
The pretty young lady with the long black hair smiled in return, "Oh! I'll have one."
And they all went home happy.
