Learn Chinese - 目不识丁- Doesn’t Even Recognize the Character Ding

by BBelew57 on January 30th, 2008

目 mu 不 bu 识 shi 丁 ding - doesn't even recognize the character ding.

Need a new metaphor to describe someone who is hopelessly stupid?

This is it. One horizontal stroke and one vertical stroke. That's it.

A rich man hired a scholar to teach his young and intellectually challenged son to read - something, anything - for a reward.

The son practiced the character for ding for nine days. The scholar showed the boy some nails (ding) to help remind him.

When the test came, the boy still failed.

The scholar replied - it's like trying to make fine furniture from rotten wood.

Do you know anybody that this term might fit?
