Christmas in Asia - Celebrating in China, Hong Kong and Macao
Christmas day is not a legal holiday in China.
Less than one percent of Chinese are Christian (still a lot of people) might consider themselves Christians unofficially.
They will usually privately observe Christmas.
Others celebrate Christmas-like festivities even though they do not consider themselves Christians.
Sending cards, exchanging gifts, and hanging stockings are copied from the West.
Both Hong Kong and Macau have designated Christmas, December 25th, a public holiday. Both are former colonies of Western powers and have had some Christian cultural heritage, albeit very little.
More and more commercial Christmas decorations - signs, and other money making schemes are becoming increasingly visible during the month of December in the big cities of mainland China.
In the 60s the economical boom in Japan led partially to the Christmas influence making its way into that culture. It seems reasonable that the same would happen with the economical boom going on in China now, no?
How will you spend Christmas?
