South Korea to Build Flying Ship by 2012

The United States has ships that can catch airplanes.

South Korea wants to build a ship that can fly....by 2012.

South Korea wants to have a large commercially viable flying ship that can boost the speed of its maritime transportation.

Called the WIG - Wing-in-ground, the craft:

1. will be built by 2012

2. will weigh 300 tons

3. be 77 meters long

4. 65 meters across

5. carry 100 tons of cargo

6. cruise at 250-300 kphwing-in-ground.jpg

Slower than a speeding Boeing 747 jumbo jet  but able to carry the same payload.

The craft is designed to benefit " from the so-called WIG that gives a powerful natural lift to objects traveling at high speed close to the surface of water."

When a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier finds itself in danger of a nearby submarine, the carrier will run. No ship, submarine or otherwise, can keep up.

If a South Korean WIG finds itself in danger...it can just fly away.

Do you think this project will fly?
