Under a project called 'mega city' U.S. based Cisco is in talks with the Shanghai government to establish a broadband network in the downtown area for the World Expo in 2010.
"Cisco has invested US$155 million in China on research and development and will continue to pump in funds for projects, including the expansion of its Shanghai-based R&D center," says a Cisco executive VP.
The vision is for a network that:
1. is wireless
2. is green
3. will support high-definition video transfer
4. will connect government-authorized networks in areas of traffic control, security and environmental regulation.
5. use Wi-Fi and WiMax technologies from next year's games
Shanghai is testing a wireless network where their formula One races are being held.
Cisco prefers WiMax to Wi-Fi because of wider coverage and higher speeds.
