One in Four Chinese Affected by Natural Disasters

by BBelew57 on August 22nd, 2007

Some 310 million Chinese, almost one in four, have been affected by natural disasters so far this year.

And if you figure the government will step in for relief aid, then the disasters pretty much affect everyone.

Losses to the economy have been 126.4 billion yuan ($16.85 billion).

So far this year, the National Disaster Reduction Commission and the Ministry of Civil Affairs has launched 41 emergency operations

and distributed more than 40,000 tents.natural.disaster.jpg

Disaster relief funds are more than $1.4 billion.

The number of people affected this year is up by 9.4%, but the death toll, thankfully, is down by 34.8%.

More people are on the wrong end of disasters, but China is getting better at being there when needed.

Three reasons:

1. Provinces and regions are better protected from floods

2. China has a better emergency response system

3. Quality of residential buildings has improved.

Have you every experienced a disaster of some sort?
