Liu Xiang is the only Chinese athlete to give serious competition to Yao Ming as the best known and best loved male athletes in China.
Having a world record will do that. And, it's in an event that is not typically a strong one for the Chinese...the 110 meter hurdles.
Liu Xiang showed why he is the world champion and why he will be the one to beat in the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympic Games when he beat out Terrence Trammell of the United States to win the Reebok Grand Prix 100 meter hurdles.
It's still a tad bit early for everyone to start getting Olympic fever...but it's not far off. All of China will surely be rooting for Liu Xiang to do them proud.
Now, if only Yao Ming could bring them an NBA championship.
