Japanese Wife Loses Husband Who Gave His Life Saving Others in Indonesian Garuda Crash

by BBelew57 on March 10th, 2007

It's true. The steward and stewardesses do more than just deliver food and make passengers comfortable.

I was told this by a student of mine who went on to become an airline stewardess.

When I asked her why she just wanted to be a mile high hostess, she got angry. My job is also to keep the passengers safe.

The Indonesian husband of a Japanese woman and purser aboard Garuda Indonesia, according to witnesses, went back and forth several times to help passengers to safety, pushing them out, leading them out, until an explosion took his life.

"My job is not only to deliver food and serve passengers. The most important thing is to save the passengers in an emergency situation," is what he told his wife each time before he flew and what he told his 5-year old son.

"My dream is to make Garuda the best airline and I will be the best purser."

Garuda may not be the best airline…but this man, Wiranto Wooryono, will rank as one of the best pursers.

Tamie, my stewardess friend, was right. Those men and women on airplanes do more than just serve.

I wonder sometimes about the stewards and stewardesses I see on flights. I hope I never find out.

Would you give your life for someone you don't know, IF, it were considered your job?
