The Shanghai tourism commission says China is embarrassed when the country's tourists exhibit ungentleman like behavior abroad.
Uncouth behavior is attributed to Chinese people's lack of awareness of public property and selfishness.
Another reason is Chinese tourists don't understand local customs of the countries they visit.
Chinese tourists made 31 million overseas trips in 2005. That's an awful lot of ill will being spread around.
Education in manners and etiquette is being infused into kindergartens and primary schools.
With any luck, they might be some changes evident in a couple of generations or more.
FWIW, almost any country's overseas visitors seem to leave their common sense at home. Somehow, they think they can get away with stuff overseas that they wouldn't dream of doing at home.
Hence...the term 'ugly American.'
Japanese are no better. I have seen too many of these timid and respective people go cuckoo on shopping sprees in foreign countries.
So, why do people leave their manners at home when they go abroad?
