Taiwan + Japan + Costa Rica + Stanford + $75 million = a difference in the world
Taiwanese born Jerry Yang and his wife of Japanese descent, Akiko Yamazaki, who was raised in Costa Rica, met in Japan on a Kyoto Stanford Studies program about 15 years ago.
Both went on to graduate from Stanford, one with a masters and bachelors in electrical engineering and the other with a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering.
Together, they plan to make a difference in the world with a $75 million gift to Stanford to build an Environment and Energy Building, give $5 million to a high-tech Learning and Knowledge Center for the School of Medicine and $2
0 million to think about.
All things considered, amazing things come out of Stanford…Jerry Yang and Akiko Yamazaki are two of them.
But, it's that mixture of cultures and exposure to the world's needs, coupled with diligence in study and at work that have added up to the opportunity for Yang and Yamazaki to make a difference in the world.
Kudos to the couple. There should be more like them.
