Economic Success Leads to Taller, Fatter Chinese
China's GDP is growing…so are the waistlines of the country's children.
China stands taller now in the world…so do the country's kids.
A survey of 138.775 children in urban and suburban areas of nine major cities revealed that the average boy in China is 6.4cm (2.5") taller now than 30 years ago.
Girls are 6.2cm (2.3") taller.
Boys are 3kg (6.6lbs) heavier and girls are 2.7kg (6lbs) heavier. Yao Ming, Sun Ming Ming, and Bao Xi Shun were too old to be included.
It appears the Chinese are able to eat better, well at least more…fatty junk foods rather than healthy grains and vegetables.
If people have more money, why can't they afford to eat better, not more, no?
By all accounts, if economic success does equate to bigger waistlines, America should be among the fattest countries in the world…..uh…
China has also seen a rise in obesity and diabetes.
Beijing has also had to raise the height under which children get free public bus rides.
So, why doesn't economic success equal better health instead of worse health?
What do you think?
