Mumbai Not Going to the Birds

by BBelew57 on November 8th, 2006

Mumbai is India’s financial and entertainment capital.

The city officials also think that too many pigeons are making a happy home there as well.

City officials started imposing a 500rupee find ($11) on people caught feeding pigeons in Mumbai’s posh Marine Drive area which overlooks the Arabian Sea.

The reasons:

1. Keep the city clean - bird droppings are everywheremumbai marine drive.jpg

2. Keep the city disease free - pigeons carry disease and spread filth as well as cause lung problems.

An area has been designated for pigeon feeding, if they can just get the people to remember. The birds already know where it is.

Residents in the area back the move.

Okay, I don’t live in Mumbai and I don’t know just how bad a pest the pigeons are. But, it seems a sign that times are good when a city has the leeway to worry about when and where to feed birds.

Things are looking up for Mumbai, eh?

What do you think?
