A Chinese company, using the Madrid system (the primary international system for facilitating the registration of trademarks in multiple jurisdictions around the world.) registered the 900,000th trade mark for Chinese companies.
China is the 8th largest user of the Madrid system and the most designated country in trade mark applications.
Domestic applications are also increasing.
The World Intellectual Property Organization expects China to reach its 1 millionth trademark in 2009.
But, will these 1 million companies to when they find their idea has been stolen by some company in India or another south Asian country? What about 20-30 years from now when it becomes Africa's turn to develop?
Still...it seems that more and more companies in China are beginning to understand the idea of intellectual property and perhaps, in turn, will begin to respect the IP of others.
