Toyota chair professor, Michikazu Aoi, was quoted in www.vir.com.vn as saying "There remains a great deal of uncertainty over policies enacted by the Vietnamese government that we (Japanese companies) cannot predict."
"We believe that Vietnam could have very high potential. But, the specific kinds of potential that Japan and Vietnam can share is not clear. In the early 1990's, many Japanese people thought that Vietnam could outstrip Thailand in five years. But, in my opinion, Vietnam is still 10-20 years behind. This is simply because Vietnam didn't act quickly in the mid 1990s, while Thailand enacted smart policies very quickly during that period."
By late 2005, Japanese companies had poured a $.9 billion into businesses in Vietnam.
By that same time period Thailand had received $2.12 billion and China - $6.67 billion.
Yep...it looks like Vietnam is losing out to Thailand and China. Imagine if Japan had poured all that money into Vietnam.
What do you think?
