Mao Tse-tung Goes Capitalist
Mao would roll over in his grave…if he could roll. He sits…uh..lies frozen in a building on Tiananmen Square. At least he was still frozen the last time I saw him.
I am sure the building has a name, but I don’t know what it is. It’s right outside the great hall of the people.
On the outside wall of the forbidden city is a HUGE portrait of Chairman Mao. That portrait was painted from a smaller ‘mother copy’ that is just 35" by 27" big.
Copies of Chairman Mao that have hung above the Tiananmen Gate have been lost…but the original has not.
The original is going to be auctioned on June 3 and is expected to fetch between $120-150K. The auction is open to Chinese and foreign bidders.
My bet is that, once this portrait is sold and paid for the copies that were hung and then mysteriously disappeared will suddenly reappear on ebay…taobao or some other site.
And then of course, there will be some serious forgeries as well.
What do you think?
