There is now a version of Toyota's Prius that can get more than 100mpg.
Some dude in California figured out how to put a bigger and longer lasting battery pack into his Prius, and then plug it in at night to get it charged up. After that...it's smooth sailing and a long time between trips to shell out to SHELL $3.50/gallon for gas....or more than 1200 miles between fill ups.
He still can't get any of the big car companies to take him and his technology on board. Why not!!! GM and Ford!!!!
Toyota says, that if he or anyone else messes with their current (pun intended) set up, the warranty of the car will be voided.
The cost of the conversion is about $12K....meaning it'll take a long time to recover your investment + your electric bill is going to go up for car charging.
A do-it-yourselfer might be able to convert their Prius for about $3K, the inventor says.
That leaves me out. I can't even change the battery in my flashlight.
For their part, Toyota is interested in talking to the man, Felix Kramer, about his idea. He says, Toyota could make the change before they market the car and add the price on up front.
That makes more sense. (GM, Ford...are you reading?)
Then I will have to wait 2 years instead of one to get a Prius, eh?
