Moscow Mayor is Anti-Gay

"As long as I am mayor; we will not permit these (gay) parades," Moscow Mayor, Yuri Luzhkov, was quoted as saying.

The Mayor acknowledged that some 'progressive' countries might allow such parades, but he qualified his remark of 'progressive.'

Activists attempted to lay flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier just outside the Kremlin wall. However, they were greeted by about 100 religious and nationalist extremists who kicked and  punched them.  So...the police arrested the gay activists!

This reminds me of a time when I was in Russia more than a decade ago....someone told a story about a group of men who went to a public spa. They all stripped down and entered. After about an hour no one came out. Finally the spa owner went in to see what was up.

"Why haven't you all finished?" he asked.

One of the patrons replied, "the bars of soap are on the floor and NO ONE is brave enough to bend over and pick it up."

Russia was not gay friendly then, and it doesn't seem much has changed.

What do you think about that?

gays,, i cant understand them. but, they have their own life. i think the lawer cant solve the homoerotism, it is the psychologist's job.

I live in the Bay Area of San Francisco...perhaps the most gay friendly area in the nation.

Whether I like or don't like, understand or don't understand...we are 'forced' in many ways to get along.

Russia has a different view on this. I thought that was interesting.

Thank you for reading and for your comments, June.

good thing that the mayor is anti-gay! Its too much here in san francisco...

So the gay supporters got arrested. Well I see the problem, they just need more people. As support grows russia will need to adapt. It's only natural as time progresses that russia will become more "progressive"(duh). Sure you can slow the progression with hate, but exceptance will pop it's head out eventually. All russian gay supporters need to do is keep being supportive.

But is it ever right to beat people?

I think not.

Some people, however, might see the acceptance of the gay movement as digression, not progression

I am not against gay, but I believe they did right thing by not allowing gay parade. I have been in may gay parade in America that their action was not appropriate for younger age. There are everyday tourist on street with their kids, do you think it's okay for a under ten years old kids or even a teenager to watch the gay behavior on public. They have right to do what ever they want but in their home or bedroom not on street. They are good people and human, they have right as mush as the straight people have right, but please don't create more hate among others because of your action. I am agree with their parade as long as keep it like other parade; pleasant and joyful like the name parade, not sexual.

Dori,
I totally agree with you.
Gays can live their own life style...but don't flaunt it!
