GM’s Car Selling Techniques in China
The median age car buyer in China is 35 years old vs. 50 years old in the US.
A younger market calls for a different strategy.
General Motors did its thing at last year’s MTV’s music awards show in China and then MTV followed that up by recruiting Chinese pop stars for GM promotions.
The result - GM overtook Volkswagen as the top selling car maker on the mainland.
Geely has created owner’s clubs to help build brand loyalty and an avenue for the most important word-of-mouth advertising.
China is different and the market is different.
Geely knows China. Kudos to GM for thinking different as well, for knowing and wanting to know business in China
What do you think?

I think it is always interesting to see a moribund foreign company thrive overseas, usually because of new blood leading the overseas venture. There are many American companies that are doing poorly in the United States that might thrive in China. In particular, I think of a number of franchises in the U.S. that have lost out to others here, but in China have the opportunity to win in a “whole new ballgame.”

I’ll bet quite a few companies would like to look over your shoulder at the list of those you think might succeed and talk to you about why you think so.
Perhaps you should consider that. Or maybe you already have.

Thanks for you comment, AJ. I must admit I do NOT know so much about the many Chinese car makers and I appreciate you teaching me.
