China - Buddhism, Islam, Protestantism, Taoism and Catholicism

by BBelew57 on April 26th, 2006

Not long ago a Tibetan Lama who was appointed by the Chinese government made an appearance. (Shouldn’t God do that? not make an appearance…appoint the Lama.)

The 16 year old boy spoke from a script somewhat reflecting on how Beijing still directs religious issues….until they stand on the sidelines at a speech in Washington. Well, I guess Beijing had no control over that. But then neither did our secret service.

China allows five official religions….Buddhism, Islam, Taoism, Protestantism and Catholicism.  Uh, what else is there?

But…the leadership of each of these groups is controlled by the Chinese government and independent religious activity is still suppressed.

If Chinese business continues to follow the same path to prosperity that Japan took, there will be another ‘religion’ that will soon occupy the Chinese heart - materialism.

What do you think?
