The Japanese say, "He who climbs Mt. Fuji once is wise, he who climbs it twice is a fool."
Mt. Fuji might be one of the most recognizable natural landmarks in the world. Let's see, Grand Canyon and, uh, well that's all I can think of. Can you think of more?
Japan is a little bit smaller than the state of CA, where I live, and it is 67% mountainous. Only 13% of it is plains. There are numerous valleys and gorges as well as fan-shaped deltas. There is the Kanto, Osaka and Nobi plains.
But, Mt. Fuji is the king. I'll go in detail in a future post. My point here is that most people take pride in their country. This is not a patriotic pride, more on that later as well, it is a love my country because it is beautiful kind of pride. And the Japanese love the beauty of their country. Praise their country's beauty and you will find a friend.
The most beautfiul of all? Well, I returned home from a trip yesterday and was standing outside of the San Jose airport waiting to be picked up. I saw a lamppost with a flag on it fluttering in the wind. On the flag was Mt. Fuji.

It really is beautiful. Oh, and I climbed it three times. I wonder what that makes me.
